Author Bio: Nathaniel H. Bishop

Nathaniel Bishop (1837-1902) was born in Medford, MA. At age 17, he hiked across South America. Later in life, he became a canoe enthusiast. In his first canoe, he started on a voyage from Quebec down the east coast of the United States, but the canoe was too heavy. In its replacement, (the Maria Theresa, a 58-pound paper canoe), he made the trip and chronicled his adventure in Voyage of the Paper Canoe, first published in 1878. In 1880, he founded the American Canoe Association.
