Author Bio: Bernice Kelly Harris

From the time she was a young girl growing up in Clayton, North Carolina, Bernice Kelly wanted to be a writer and storyteller As an adult, she wrote beautifully crafted plays, short stories and seven novels. For a time she was the Grand Dame of North Carolina letters--with a large circle of friends and admirers, some of them individuals whose own work she had done much to encourage. Then literary interests shifted. By the time she died in 1973 he had outlived her reputations, her books were out of print, and she was so poor that she had become a ward of Northhampton County. Now a younger generation may be prepared to recognize her gifts.
