Plane travel tends to be lengthy most of the time. At such times, even an occasional traveler might actually be clueless about how to dress up for an airplane journey. There are people who put such doubts to rest by insisting that the attire worn on an airplane journey should be comfortable and chic for the traveler. At the same time, it should not be offensive and irritating to co-passengers. Here are a few tips on what exactly should be worn on a plane.

Dressing Tips for an Airplane Journey

Clothing
It need not be told that airplane crew members tend to judge their passengers by the clothing that they wear. Avoid wearing clothing that is too short or one that reveals your body curves to the last detail. There have been several instances where passengers were forced by the airline staff to either dress appropriately or alight the airplane. To put it simply, the clothing that you choose to wear should be elegant, dignified and comfortable. Remember, what might sound like comfortable clothing at home or on the beach, may not necessarily be appropriate for a plane journey. Some simple tips to choose the best clothing are as below:

Let us start with your inner wear and lingerie. Since plane journeys are long, use lingerie that is made from natural fibers like cottons and wool. You cannot negate the chances of mishaps on a plane journey. At such times, synthetic lingerie can be stifling and it also has a chance of catching fire easily. Wearing synthetic lingerie can also lead to rashes and skin irritation during lengthy journeys.
Wear clothing that is long-sleeved and comfortable, preferably in dark colors. I insist on long-sleeved because once the plane takes off, there is every chance of feeling cold due to low temperature settings on inflight air conditioners. During these long journeys, your clothing might be accidentally subjected to food spills. Wearing dark clothing keeps the clothing from looking dirty.
Avoid clothing that is too tight-fitting. It can not just be offensive to some co-passengers but can also hamper your blood circulation. Clothes should be loose but perfectly fitting. Use clothing in natural fibers like cottons as they suck the humidity.
Avoid wearing clothes made of thin fibers as you might end up feeling too cold to enjoy your journey. It is better to dress up in soft and warm clothing.
Wear a woolen jacket or sweater which can double up as your pillow whenever you feel like taking a nap during the journey. At the same time, carry a scarf or a stole along with some extra handkerchiefs to make your journey easy.

Footwear
This advice is applicable especially to women. Avoid wearing high-heeled footwear during plane journey. High-heeled shoes can cause you a lot of discomfort during the flight. At the same time, they can get pretty uncomfortable when you have to take a long walk from the arrival gate to the customs section. From the airline’s point of view, high-heeled shoes can damage the cabin carpet. Instead, wear one of your old pair of sneakers or flat soled footwear. Ideally, wear shoes that give plenty of space for air to move around your toes. One highly popular idea is to carry a pair of flip-flops in your cabin luggage and change your footwear once you are seated on the flight. Carry a pair of socks with you as an added precaution.

Cosmetics and Accessories
There are some strict restrictions imposed on carrying liquid cosmetics like lotions and deodorants in pressurized bottles as part of your cabin luggage. Here are some more accessories that you should avoid carrying on the plane.

Check the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) website to get updated details on prohibited cosmetics on airplanes. However, you can definitely carry some face creams as well as lip gels to protect your skin during flights.
Avoid wearing strong perfumes and aftershave lotions before boarding the flight. These might seem pleasant and fragrant to you but your co-passenger might be allergic to the smell of such perfumes.
Avoid wearing metal jewelry, metal cuff links or tie clips during your journey as they are prone to raise the alarm at security checks counter.
Carry an eye mask to help you sleep well during your journey.

It never hurts to dress nicely for your airplane journeys. It not only ensures your safety during the journey but also helps the airline to serve you better without a hitch. So, go ahead and have a safe journey!

You are sitting at the airport waiting to board your flight, looking forward to reach your destination. You look at the announcement board at the airport and breathe a sigh of relief that your flight is scheduled on time. However, within a few minutes you hear an announcement, “Attention please, all passengers on XYZ airlines flight 310589 to Chicago, the gate has been changed to 31A. Also there will be a delay in departure. The new departure time for this flight will be 11.45. This is due to heavy snow in Chicago. We would like to apologize for the delayed departure. Thank you for your patience.” Now, this can be an unpleasant experience, unless you decide to take it in the right stride, not lose your calm and enjoy the delay. Well… I know it sounds a little weird, but there are a few creative ways to kill time when things like that happen. Take a look at how to spend time at an airport, in case of a delayed flight.

How to Kill Time at an Airport

Carry your favorite book along…
Whenever you are traveling and especially if you are alone, make sure you carry a book you like or simply a comic book (if you do not enjoy reading intense books). If you have forgotten to carry one, walk to a magazine or book stall at the airport (you have plenty of them there) and browse through the books there. You will find a lot of people at the airport with newspapers, borrow one for the time being and return it once you are done with it. Reading is not the only thing you can do, read the entire article to know a few more interesting things.

Surf the net…
If you are carrying your laptop along or if you have a smart phone, you are definitely sorted. People with such gadgets are never alone and never bored. So, get googling. You can also enjoy a few social networking sites or simply surf the net. Online games are the best to keep you occupied during your stay at the airport. Check your emails, send your friends an email or reply to one. Use the time for yourself.

Listen to music…
A delayed flight can give you a chance to download your favorite music, which probably you have been waiting to download since a long time and listen to. Keep your ipods or MP3 players updated with good music and audio books, trust me they really help you kill time and enjoy the experience, rather than sulking. If you do not have these gadgets, your mobile phones support MP3 format, update your cell phone with some good music.

Window shopping…
Shopping is the best remedy to fight the unpleasant feeling of flight delay. No, I don’t mean go shopping at the airport and shell out cash, but it doesn’t hurt to go and look for things. Just go window shopping! You never know you might like something and would want to pick it up for someone and make them happy. Or even better, end up buying something for yourself making yourself happy.

Pamper yourself...
This is something I did the last time I was stuck at the airport; pampered myself. Massage parlors and spas are very common these days at the airports. Give yourself a relaxed muscle tingling back or foot massage. A rejuvenating facial massage and manicure or pedicure also works wonders to help you forget your delayed boarding time. So, relax and rejuvenate.

Talk to people around…
If there’s something that the airport is rarely short of, it is people. Talking to your fellow travelers is a great way to kill time. If you are traveling with your family nothing like it you get to catch up with them and spend some quality time chatting. However, if you are nervous about starting a conversation with a stranger, simply start with “where are you flying?” and go on. Sometimes you get to meet interesting people at the airport.

So next time with an airport layover, you know what you have to do when your flights canceled to keep yourself entertained and occupied. You can also jot down your experiences and about the different kind of people you met or noticed at the airport. Perhaps even blog about the experience!

P.S. – Just make sure you are keep an eye on the time and also listen to the announcements intently; you may be waiting at the wrong gate or enjoying your massage and wouldn’t know when your flight finally takes off.

Red eye flight popularly refers to airplane journeys of short duration usually towards eastern direction. The term ‘red eye’ became popular on account of fatigue felt by travelers on such journeys. Red eye flights are scheduled at nighttime or midnight, which can leave the passengers stressed due to lack of sleep. The flight usually reaches the destination early in the morning when the passengers feel drowsy and many of them end up having red eyes due to stress. However, red eye flights need not always be that bad, provided you follow some easy precautions and catch up on some good sleep even when you are in transit. Read below to get some useful tips.

Tips to Prevent Red Eye Flight Effects

Eating Healthy
One of the most important things to do before you board the flight is to eat your fill of food. Ideally eat light dry food that suffices your daily dinner requirements. Eating beforehand helps you sleep without any interruptions throughout the journey. Usually people who look forward to food served on the airplane, tend to stay awake till the food is served and finished. You can save some precious sleeping time by eating in advance. Similarly, eating light and dry food exempts the possibility of air sickness. Keep a water bottle with you throughout the journey instead of waiting for the airline crew to provide you with a glass of water each time you are thirsty.

Seat Selection
It is essential to choose a seat with ample leg space and a good leg rest. At the same time, the seat should be recliner so as to get into a proper sleeping position during the flight. Ideally, select a seat which is not too close to the two end exits. This is because, washrooms are located at these exits, which makes this area full of activity throughout the flight. Seats at the rear or near the emergency exits are usually non-recliner. So even these seats are not recommended. Choose a window seat towards the frontal part of the plane as it has ample leg space. A window seat offers you a chance of peaceful sleep as your neighbors will not disturb you for accessing the plane aisle. Similarly, window seats offer you a chance to recline your head on the plane’s window for additional comfort.

Sleeping Well
Most of the passengers find it difficult to sleep peacefully on planes. At such times, the best option is to induce sleep by creating a good sleeping environment. One of the most important things to do is to recline your seat at its full limit. This is because one can get best sleep in horizontal position only. Ask for a blanket to keep you warm throughout the airplane journey. Similarly, a cushion to support your head would help you sleep better. One ideal way to induce good sleep is to use an eye mask and a pair of cotton ear muffs. You can even carry some lavender scented gel to sniff on as lavender is known to induce sleep as part of aroma therapy. Avoid listening to music or watching movies while on red eye flights as they eat away your precious relaxation time.

Tips to Recover from Red Eye Flight Effect

These were suggestions to help you avoid the red eye flight effects. But what to do in case you happen to be a victim of this problem and want to recover from it at the earliest? Here is what you can do:

  • Drink a lot of water or fresh fruit juices. The basic idea here is to stay hydrated so that you will feel less exhausted.
  • Your body will go on signaling throughout the day that it is tired but keep your mind alert. Steer clear of any temptation to hit the bed and go off to sleep. Instead, start the work that you had planned to do before you embarked on the flight.
  • If there is no work schedule, then use the time to work out or go and explore the new city. Maybe, you can engage in activities like shopping or sight seeing that are bound to keep you alert and awake.

I personally advise all my readers to fight the desire to sleep at whatever cost and go to sleep at their daily schedule only. This will help your body adjust faster to the time difference.
